Short course overall winner, Brandon Fell on the bike..

(17 April 2011) When news was received that a swim permit could not be obtained for Sunday's triathlon, the GTF board moved quickly to modify the event format and fifty-five athletes registered for the RUN-BIKE-RUN Duathlon. Two 5Ks sandwiched the athlete's choice of a 20K or 40K bike ride. For 5 of the competitors, this was their first GTF event, and with any luck, we have them hooked.

Competing with the 20K bike distance, Brandon Fell took 1st in Men's Overall
with a 16:56 Run, 35:28 Bike and 18:22 Run split for a total time of 1:10:46. He was followed by relative newbie to the sport - Gabe Lombard, who crossed the line in 1:19:27. In third place, Steve Blanton with a 1:21:11 finishing time.

In the women's division, veteran cyclist Mylene Garcia, took 1st with 23:47 Run, 38:54 Bike and 27:10 Run split for a finishing time of 1:29:51.  In second was Tracie Brodie with a total time of 1:32:26 and in third place, returning powerhouse runner, Vickie Daniel. She clocked in with a 1:34:21 time.

GTF's National team (see article) used the 40K event as training for the 2011 Pacific Games Triathlon happening on September 3rd in New Caledonia.   The team's coach, Cameron O'Neal, lead the way to finish the longer course in 1:49:03, with splits of 19:04 (run), 1:07:11 (bike), 22:48 (run).

National Team member, Joe Dela Cruz on the bike.

National Team member, Kelly Dawes on the bike.

Andrew Parry took the second spot in 1:51:43, holding off National Team members Mark Walters and Joseph DelaCruz who finished 3rd and 4th with times of 1:53:41 and 1:54:55 respectively.  Kelly Dawes was the sole competitor in the women's division with at 2:13:21 total time.  With the rest of the long distance field within striking distance.

Guam's National Triathlon Championship, and Olympic distance event to be held July 2 at the Merizo Pier should be an exciting showdown .
